Getting started with Mutter
Install the app, sign in, grant two permissions, and dictate anywhere with a hotkey.
Mutter turns speech into finished text wherever your cursor is. Hold a key, talk, let go — clean text appears in the app you’re using. Here’s the one-time setup.
1. Install
Download Mutter from muttervoice.com, open the .dmg, and drag Mutter into your Applications folder. Launch it; Mutter lives in your menu bar (the M icon) and opens a window on first run.
2. Sign in
Sign in with your email or Google to activate your plan. Your dictation history stays on your Mac — signing in is about your subscription, not your words.
3. Grant two permissions
Mutter needs exactly two macOS permissions, and the app walks you through both:
- Microphone — so it can hear you. (See Granting microphone access.)
- Accessibility — so it can paste finished text into the app you’re in. (See Granting Accessibility access.)
4. Hold to talk
Put your cursor in any text field, hold your push-to-talk key, speak a sentence, and let go. The text lands where you were typing. The default key is a combo like ⌥ Space — you can change it under Settings → Hotkeys.
