Dictation stopped working after an update
If Mutter looks permitted but stops hearing you or stops pasting after an update, reset the permission once.
Occasionally, after Mutter updates itself, macOS keeps showing Mutter as allowed under Microphone or Accessibility, but the permission silently stops working — dictation isn’t heard, or text no longer pastes. This is a known macOS quirk: the system can stop honoring a permission for a freshly-updated app while still showing the checkbox on. The fix is to reset it once.
The fix (about 60 seconds)
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Go into Accessibility. Select Mutter, click – to remove it, then click + and add it back from
/Applications/Mutter.app. Make sure its toggle is on. - Do the same under Microphone (toggle Mutter off and back on; remove + re-add if needed).
- Quit Mutter completely (menu-bar M → Quit) and reopen it.
Will this keep happening?
No. We’ve changed how Mutter is signed so future auto-updates keep your permissions intact. This one-time reset is only needed to recover from an update that already broke the link. If it persists after the steps above, email support@muttervoice.com with your macOS version and we’ll help directly.
